Why We Love Travelling in a Van in Morocco in Autumn
Autumn in Morocco offers everything we love about van travel: breathtaking scenery, mild temperatures, and moments of tranquility in the heart of nature.
One of our most vivid memories is an impromptu stopover in the Atlas Mountains, where the van turned into our cozy refuge. We watched the sun set over the golden mountains, then spent the evening under a starry sky. Moments like these make van travel unforgettable.
Whether it's waking up to the sound of birds in a mountain village or stargazing in the desert, these moments make for a truly adventurous trip.
Our Favourite Autumn Destinations for Van Travellers
- The Atlas Mountains: A Golden Escape
Autumn transforms the Atlas Mountains into a spectacular golden landscape.
We love taking the Tizi n'Tichka pass at this time of year.
One of our favorite stops is the village of Imlil, nestled at the foot of the mountains. After parking the van, we often go hiking, enjoying the fresh air and breathtaking views.
Then it's back to the comfort of our converted van for a hot meal-nothing like it after a day of exploration.
- Merzouga: Peace and Serenity in the Sahara
The Merzouga dunes are a must-see, especially in autumn when temperatures are perfect.
On one of our trips, we parked the van near the dunes and spent the day hiking and sandboarding.
In the evening, we lit a campfire and watched the stars light up the desert sky. If you dream of peaceful nights under the stars, this is the place to be.
- The Ouzoud Waterfalls: An Autumn Jewel Not to Be Missed
One of the most beautiful discoveries we've made on our van trips is undoubtedly the Ouzoud waterfalls.
Nestled in the heart of the Moroccan Atlas mountains, these impressive waterfalls take on an even more magical appearance in autumn.
With the surrounding landscape changing color and tourist numbers dropping, it's an ideal time to visit.
- Essaouira: A Rest by the Sea
The cool autumn breeze makes Essaouira an ideal coastal getaway.
We like to park the van near the beach and spend our days exploring the medina or simply relaxing by the sea.
The slower pace of autumn allows you to really soak up the local atmosphere, and there's no better place to do that than in this laid-back coastal town.

Our tips for an autumn trip in a converted van
After many autumn trips across Morocco, here are a few tips to make the experience even more enjoyable:
- Prepare for Variable Temperatures:
Autumn in Morocco can be unpredictable.
Mornings are often cool, especially in the mountains, while afternoons can be warmer.
We always recommend bringing layered clothing to stay comfortable at all times of the day. - Plan, But Stay Flexible:
Although autumn is less busy than summer, it's still a good idea to plan your campsites in advance.
However, leave room in your schedule for spontaneous detours-this is often where the best surprises are hidden. - Check the Routes :
Before setting off, especially in the mountains, be sure to check the weather and road conditions.
Autumn rains can sometimes make some routes more difficult, but don't worry, we're always on hand to provide alternative routes if necessary. - Immerse yourself in local culture:
Autumn is also an ideal time to connect with local communities.
We had great experiences sharing meals with locals or learning about local crafts. These moments enrich every trip.
